Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a
unique imaging modality that is capable of detecting certain
diseases at an early stage. A PET scan will provide
information that can be used in the planning and management of
your care, in determining therapy and in following your
progress.
PET Applications PET is utilized
in:
- Oncology to determine the location
and extent of tumor growth.
- Neurology to aid in the diagnosis
of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, stroke, brain tumors and
seizures.
- Cardiology to determine the perfusion and viability of
the heart.
Scheduling Your
Procedure When scheduling your PET scan:
- Inform the PET imaging staff if you
are taking any medications, you are diabetic, you are
pregnant or you are nursing.
- Discuss diet and exercise requirements with the PET
imaging staff.
On the Day of the
Exam (please call for specific instructions in addition to the instructions below)
- Fast for at least six hours prior
to your appointment.
- Do not exercise.
- Arrive on time for the PET
procedure.
- Bring insurance information,
written order from your physician, and reports from any
previous diagnostic imaging procedure including x-ray, CT or
MRI.
- Wear warm comfortable clothing.
- Plan to spend two to three hours at the PET imaging
facility. Exam times and procedures vary with each
patient.
